Who We Are
This Lake Writers site is now out-of-date. Visit the current Lake Writers website at http://www.lakewriters.org. Lake Writers is the literary branch of the Smith Mountain Arts Council and, as of September 2011, a sub-chapter of the Valley Writers Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. We meet from 10 a.m. until noon on the second Friday of each month at the Moneta/SML Library on Rt. 122 in Moneta, Virginia. We also meet from from 10 a.m. until noon on the fourth Friday of each month at the Westlake Branch of the Franklin County Library. We do not meet on holidays when the library is closed.
Most members are retired; many are beginning writers. Some write for local publications or have self-published books. Some are commercially published. All are interested in improving their writing skills and learning about publishing opportunities. Currently the members are working on an anthology.
Special Guests: Sometimes Lake Writers sponsors special programs of interest to writers. The picture below was taken July 2, 2008, at the Moneta/SML Library, when Lake Writers hosted editor and author Chuck Sambuchino, who spoke about "Everything You Need to Know About Agents." He gave a great presentation with lots of helpful information and even mentioned us on his blog here (with picture!) and here.
Lake Writers participate in many book signings. In the picture below, Karen Wrigley, Ginny Brock, Becky Mushko, and Sally Roseveare sign books at The General Store at Westlake. The General Store carries a lot of books by local writers.
Several Lake Writers share blogging experiences and several members have created blogs. The Westlake library has wi-fi, a smart board, and lap-tops, so it's an ideal place to have a workshop. Links to members' blogs are on this page.
